About Richard

I moved to Deerfield Beach because the city had a hometown feel and I felt welcomed here.

I have been married to Verna for 56 years; we have three adult children and one grandchild.

I have been a resident of Deerfield Beach over ten years, full-time for six and many years prior as a snowbird.

Richard was raised in a family that valued public service, so it was natural that he would volunteer and seek to join organizations in his new residence.

He served as Vice President and is now President of his Farnham E association, and represents his building as Condominium Owners Organization of Century Village East (COOCVE) Director. He works to make sure all Century Village associations' rights and interests are protected.

In other areas Richard is Co-President of Temple Beth Israel of Deerfield Beach and a member of the Deerfield Beach Democratic Club.

As a navy veteran, Richard served in the United States Naval Reserve. He has a warm spot in his heart for veterans and serves as Commander of Post 265 of the Jewish War Veterans of The USA (JWV) and is a past Commander of the JWV Department of Florida. He also served on the JWV National Executive Committee.

Richard is a volunteer for Honor Flights of South Florida, and serves on the Broward Veterans Coalition.

For the previous 10 years, before moving to Florida, Richard put together and led an annual ceremony at Arlington Cemetery, honoring General Orde Wingate, who is buried there. Wingate, a British military Commander and ardent Zionist, is credited with being the founder of Israel's military. The Israeli and British ambassadors, Richard Hellman, the head of CIPAC (Christians' Israel Public Action Campaign), Military Chaplains and others attend.

Richard is not new to politics; he has a long history of service, prior to moving to Florida: He was a precinct official in Montgomery County, Maryland, for over 40 years, serving as Democratic Precinct Chair of precincts in Silver Spring and Wheaton, and Precinct Coordinator for five additional precincts. He was also a Delegate to the Montgomery County Civic Federation, and Chairman of the Fire/Rescue Committee for the Montgomery County Civic Federation. In the Oakview, Maryland Citizens Association, he served as President, Parade Committee Chairman, Newsletter Editor, Newsletter Distribution Chairman, and was honored as Citizen of the Year.

He was also active in the JWV in Silver Spring Maryland's Post 1777, serving as Post Commander and Adjutant; Post Commander, of Post 381, Department of District of Columbia. Also he was Jr. Vice Commander, Adjutant of the Department of Washington, DC; Senior Vice Commander of Department of Washington, DC.

He served the National Museum of American Jewish Military History as docent and assistant historian, and was on the board of directors.

With the B'nai B'rith lodge, he was President, Vice President, and Anti-Defamation league Representative.

As a member of the Friends of the Greenbelt Museum, he conducted tours as docent of this historic building.

Richard has extensive business experience, which has been invaluable to him as commissioner. He owned the Band Box Music Store, was Vice President of Namar Foods, a multi-million dollar wholesale food distributor and owned Double R Foods, Wholesale Food Distributor. Richard started at Namar Foods as a salesman and worked his way up to Vice President. He stepped in to run the company when the owner got sick. At that time, the business was failing; Richard turned it around into a multi-million dollar corporation. He then ran his own food distributorship until he retired.
